Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924), to whose name the recently held international piano competition in Bolzano is dedicated, was a pianist and composer of formidable gifts, two facets of his talent that come together in the 35-minute Fantasia contrappuntistica. Sandro Ivo Bartoli describes it as “a work of mystical allure and visionary genius”, an assessment borne out by a performance that conquers the music’s supreme technical demands and conveys its epic architecture.
